Mswas’ CBR-III Review #24 – Smokin’ Seventeen by Janet Evanovich08/20/2011
Smokin’ Seventeen is the latest in Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum series, set in Trenton, NJ. This is one of my favorite, light series. Stephanie Plum, bountyhunter, gets herself into various situations in each of the novels, involving a cast of regulars, and two very hunky men.
In this installment, Stephanie is targeted by a killer who leaves dead bodies in the lot on which the bail bonds office used to sit. Her parents keep trying to fix her up with the former high school football star who’s returned to town. Other characters include a bear and an aging ‘vampire,’ complete with dentures.
In a few of the recent of this series, I felt like Evanovich just phoned it in. The books were formulaic and rote. In 17, it seemed like a return to some of the zanier escapades of the past, and I enjoyed this book as a whole. Some of the commenters on amazon.com found fault with Stephanie’s sleeping around in this book. That didn’t really bother me. Stephanie has gone back and forth between the two men through the series, and so it wasn’t a big dea.
It seems like the series has picked up steam again, but I wouldn’t expect Stephanie to last past #20 unless we get into some really unique stories.
